Reviews:

RHUM Camille Nurka – 7/10

Ever wondered what would happen if Barbie had her own reality TV show? Or pondered the dodgy puritan politics of Cabbage Patch dolls? (What? You mean… I didn’t come from a cabbage?!) Ever thought mainstream lesbian-chic was a crock of shit?

Dolls Cabaret is the answer to all your questions in a clever series of sketches and songs taking a modern look at all things girl. From Barbie to Bratz, Dolls Cabaret is feminism with a funny bone. It’s smart and sassy cabaret from six very talented women.

Incredibly tight a cappella numbers with faultless harmonies and superb lyrics are interspersed with the absurd and the black. One of my favourites was a whimsical ditty requesting that god create flying sharks. Many of the darker sketches unearthed the ugly side of pop-psychology and culture. Nothing is sacred – even women’s empowerment workshops are mercilessly parodied (just in case you were thinking this was just another comedy based around tampons).

The show is also in touch with contemporary culture, including the vampire-obsessed teens (and tweens) who have gone berko over Twilight. Yes, our old friends Bella and Edward failed to escape ridicule in a sketch that really brought home just how lame this story is. I got a tingle of subversive pleasure just thinking about how much Stephenie Meyer, being a Mormon and all, would be appalled by it. And the performers knew it, and revelled in it too.

I enjoyed watching these excellent actors deliver a script with substance, with precise comic timing. I chortled the whole way through. This was well worth the night out and a great, relaxed live theatre experience. And girls, remember this: embrace your box.

Funny Tonne – Kristy Lillyst – 8 / 10

A warped view of the lives of dolls, this show is equal amounts of straight-faced smut and sweetness. It took me by surprise. Great songs and vocal work, an interesting premise and some off-beat results. Very entertaining.
